12th Annual Resi River Race 2012

Sunday 26th May 2012 | Northshore Riverside Park, Brisbane
Hosted by Brisbane Outrigger Canoe Club

Brisbane’s Bridge to Bridge: the Resi river race returns Brisbane, QLD – 5 May. 12 – The Brisbane Outrigger Canoe Club (BOCC) will play host to the Resi River Race for the twelfth year in a row. The 18km event will be held on Sunday 26th of May with crews launching from the banks of Hamilton’s newest development, Northshore Riverside Park. It is expected to attract close to 200 paddlers from as far as Tasmania and New Zealand to compete.

In previous years, the race was held in front of Southbank; however next month BOCC will take advantage of the city’s most iconic landmarks, running the course between the Gateway and Story Bridges.

The race is appropriately named after its major sponsor, Resi Home Loans, in which 2012 will be its tenth year in backing the regatta. Resi Home Loans was recently named Australia’s best non-bank lender at The Advisor’s 2012 Australian Lending Awards.

“We are delighted to once again be the major sponsor of the Resi River Race,” said Paul Kriss, national marketing manager at Resi Home Loans.

“We are always keen to support positive community events, and the Resi River Race is one way we can thank the Brisbane community for their support over the years,” he added.

For those not familiar with the sport, outrigger canoe paddling is typically an ocean-bound sport. The river location adds another dimension, giving competitors challenging and unfamiliar conditions to battle on as well as the greater Brisbane community the opportunity to preview a sport they would otherwise not be exposed to.

The race debuted back in 2001 as a part of the Brisbane Riverfestival. It was one of the first mixed crew (i.e. 3 men and 3 women) competitions held in Australia and since then the sport, race and the race category have grown from strength to strength.
2012 marks the introduction of outrigger canoe paddling in one-man rudderless canoes at the London Paralympics. More closer to home, outrigger canoe will also debut at this year’s Pan Pacific Masters Games, which will be held on the Gold Coast in November.
