April and May proved extremely busy for Brisbane Outriggers with the holding of 5 community and corporate events and our own River race over 7 weeks.

Brisbane Outrigger Canoe Club hosts team building corporate events for businesses or corporations looking for something out of the ordinary to highlight the importance of team work.

Team work is vital in an outrigger canoe. The 6 paddlers must paddle together with the same timing for the canoe to move faster than all the others and ultimately be the winner of the event.

Corporate Events:

CHUBB INSURANCE. On the 24th of April, we hosted a corporate regatta for Chubb Insurance and their brokers, involving around 100 competitors. After registration and a hearty lunch of Nando’s chicken, the crews battled it out in 3 rounds of heats. The teams were selected for the finals on a ‘points count back’ and the event of the day, the final, was held and tightly contested.

The afternoon was a huge success with medal presentations held on the foreshore of the Brisbane River, and refreshments served as the sun was setting, and all paddlers and officials kicked back and relaxed. Thanks to Dave Hansen for the co-ordination with Chubb Insurance to hold this event for the third year in a row. Click here to view the photos.

HANSON CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS P/L. On the 10th of May, BOCC held another very successful team building event for Hanson Constructions at our wonderful site on the Brisbane River. About 40 participants from the construction industry took part on this day with heats and a final held similar to the Chubb Day. Again, the participant’s competitive streaks appeared and the racing was close and fierce. At the end of the day the crews all cleaned up and went down to our local for dinner and refreshments. Many thanks to David CHOW for the opportunity to host this event for Hanson Construction Materials.

Queensland Corporate Games.

The 18th of May brought the Qld Corporate Games Outrigger event to the beach at Colmslie Reserve, Murrarie. With 33 teams and 233 participants it was all hands on deck. As the host of this event for the past six years, BOCC members, and the event co-ordinator, the wonderful Jill Duffield, co-ordinated a full day of racing for the corporate teams entered in this year’s event.

The weather was windy and quite cool for the start of racing. Most teams set up tents and even their own BBQ’s to fuel their hungry paddlers. The coffee van, Café2U, and a sausage sizzle cooked by BOCC volunteers were very popular. The races were held over 250 metres with heat times getting faster and faster as the day went on. The final was hotly contested with Boeing coming out as the winner of the day, with Price Waterhouse Coopers coming in a very close second. The winners were followed closely by one of the tents blowing away in the 25 knot winds!

A fantastic day was had by all. My sincere thanks to all BOCC volunteers who gave up their time to assist on the day. Click here to link to Qld Corporate Games results.

Muslim Womens Come and Try Day.

On the 31st of May 2008 the ladies of Brisbane Outrigger hosted a come and try day for a group of 28 Muslim women to introduce them to new activities such as outrigger canoeing. The morning commenced with welcomes and introductions followed by an impromptu indoor canoe set up and stroke practice (due to an outdoor torrential downpour!). The rain eased and we got canoes in the water, and the ladies out and paddling. After an initial hesitation, the girls we loving it and we had paddlers lining up for a second and even third go. By all accounts, everyone had a fantastic morning. Thanks to Michelle from Brisbane City Council and Communify QLD for the opportunity to make some new friends. Click here to view the photos.
